Switch to pixel art from browser tools

Switching from browser pixel tools into a local pixel art install keeps your canvas on disk and removes account galleries from the critical path. Export what you need from the tab, extract the Windows zip, then reopen files in LibreSprite so the project lives beside the editor folder you already verified.

Home: pixel art. Windows install: install on Windows.

What transfers

PNG frames, GIF animations, and sprite sheets usually transfer. Cloud-only project history, web undo stacks, and account galleries usually do not. Export deliberately before you close the tab.

Suggested export order

  1. Export a PNG of the current frame or sheet from the browser tool.
  2. Export a GIF if you already animated in the tab.
  3. Note canvas size and palette if the web app shows them.
  4. Install the local editor from GitHub Releases.
  5. Open the PNG or GIF and rebuild layers if needed.

Why switch at all

Browser toys are convenient on phones. They are weak for offline labs, USB handoff, and long animation sessions. A local pixel art client matches those desks.

Keep the tab as fallback

During the first week you can keep the browser tool for quick doodles while the zip path becomes habit. Download-safe rules still apply to the desktop install: download safely.

Paid editors are a different fork

If you are leaving a paid proprietary sprite seat, treat that as a licence choice, not only a file export. Compare: vs paid sprite editors. Guide: pixel art vs paid editors.

Verify after import

Check dimensions, colour count, and frame order after open. Save a native project file once the canvas looks right. First hour: installed.

Classroom handoff

Students can export from the browser at home, then continue on lab PCs that already have the pixel art zip extracted. Computer setup: this computer.

Browser-vs-local guide: vs browser toys. Releases: releases.

Limits to state up front

Not every web format opens perfectly. If a file fails, re-export PNG frames and rebuild. Do not download a random converter bundle bundled with adware while you troubleshoot.

Account galleries versus folders

Browser tools often store work in an account gallery. Local pixel art work stores files in folders you choose. Decide where student folders live before you migrate a whole class. Computer setup: this computer.

Colour and size surprises

Web canvases may use different default sizes or indexed colour rules. After open, confirm the canvas size matches the game or icon spec. Adjust before you spend an hour polishing. Palettes: palettes and layers.

Animation handoff

If the browser tool exports only a GIF, you may lose separate layer structure. Rebuild layers in the desktop editor when clean animation control matters. Guide: animation basics.

Teaching the why

Tell students the switch is about offline labs and honest installs, not about shaming browser doodles. Keep the tone practical. Home pillar: pixel art.

Rolling back

If the desktop path fails on day one, students can keep exporting from the browser while you fix SmartScreen or extract mistakes. Do not solve that failure with a random mirror. Download-safe: download safely.

Staff checklist

  • Export samples collected before the cutover day.
  • Zip extracted on the lab image.
  • One reopen test per sample format.
  • Releases bookmark present on the staff profile.

Install: Windows. Releases: releases. GitHub: GitHub. Safety: safe. Vs paid: vs paid. Vs browser guide: vs browser toys. First hour: installed. Zip: zip extract. Update: update.

Practical notes for helpdesk staff

When a ticket says the pixel art window will not open, ask for the extract path screenshot first. Most failures are missing data folders or blocked exes, not missing features. Confirm the zip came from GitHub Releases before you escalate. Point the reporter at the home pillar and the download-safe page so they can self-check the URL shape.

Keep language plain on the ticket: name the zip, name the exe, name the folder. Avoid brand-first shortcuts that skip extract steps. After a fix, ask for one saved sprite as proof. That closes the loop faster than a vague “please try again later” reply and keeps the next volunteer from repeating the same mirror mistake.

Staff can also keep a known-good USB extract labelled with the tag and zip filename. That stick is for emergency restores only after the networked Releases fetch fails. It is not a reason to skip documenting the official URL on every machine image you ship this term for pixel art labs.
