After you install pixel art tools
The first hour after a pixel art install should prove the extract, not decorate the desktop. You already downloaded libresprite-development-windows-x86_64.zip. Now confirm libresprite.exe runs with its data folder, draw once, and write the Releases URL on the ticket.
Home pillar: pixel art. Windows install: install on Windows.
Eight first-hour checks
- Confirm the extract folder. libresprite.exe must sit beside data/ and the shipped DLLs before you call pixel art installed.
- Launch the exe once. Open libresprite.exe from that folder and wait for the window on Windows.
- Create a tiny sprite. Draw a few pixels and save once so mouse paths feel familiar.
- Add a second frame. Prove frames and onion skinning appear for a short animation test.
- Load a palette. Open a .gpl file from data/palettes so colours match a known set.
- Bookmark Releases. Save the GitHub Releases URL for LibreSprite/LibreSprite as the only update door.
- Skip mystery mirrors. Refuse portal zips that claim to fix SmartScreen by wrapping a different binary.
- Write the ticket line. Note zip name, extract path, and one saved sprite on the machine ticket.
Data and DLLs are part of install
Upstream ships fonts, skins, palettes, and libraries inside the zip. Missing data usually means a partial extract, not a broken editor. Re-extract from the same zip before you hunt alternate downloads. Extract guide: zip extract. Portable layout: portable folder.
Palettes appear on first projects
Load a palette from data/palettes early so colour picking stays consistent across frames. Details: palettes and layers. Animation notes: animation basics.
Update door and uninstall
Updates mean a newer zip from GitHub Releases, then a fresh extract. Uninstall means deleting the folder. Guide: update and uninstall. Do not invent winget upgrade lines; no winget id was found.
Offline expectation
After the first fetch, pixel art work can run offline from disk. You still needed network to obtain the zip. Offline notes: first run. Safety: is it safe.
Keep browser toys as optional fallback
If SmartScreen blocks the exe during the first hour, keep a browser canvas available while you re-verify the GitHub URL. Comparison: vs paid sprite editors. Switch plan: switch from browser pixel tools.
Avoid installing unrelated photo editor packs in the same hour unless those tickets already exist. The cluster covers pixel art only.
Lab sign-off sentence
Write: pixel art installed from libresprite-development-windows-x86_64.zip, extract verified, one sprite saved, Releases bookmarked. That sentence is enough for most club handoffs.
Computer setup recap: set up on this computer. Releases: releases. Download safety: download safely. GitHub: on GitHub.
When the hour succeeds, stop downloading alternate pixel art portals the same day. Extra mirrors undo the calm you just earned.
Folder layout worth screenshotting
Take a quick screenshot of the extract showing libresprite.exe beside data/. Attach that screenshot to the machine ticket. Future you will thank present you when a student claims the binary came empty.
If Windows Search surfaces a second libresprite.exe from Downloads, delete the stray copy so only the documented folder remains.
What success looks like on the ticket
- Releases URL written beside the OS version.
- libresprite-development-windows-x86_64.zip noted as the download door.
- Extract verified with libresprite.exe present.
- One local sprite saved without a store account.
- No Softonic shortcuts left on the Desktop.
That checklist is the entire first-hour bar for pixel art. Anything else can wait until tomorrow.
Pixel art desk checklist
Keep pixel art installs boring: named zip, full extract, one proven save, Releases bookmark. Soft parks for macOS package managers stay parked because no brew id was found on the research date.
- Prefer libresprite-development-windows-x86_64.zip from the current non-prerelease tag.
- Extract so libresprite.exe sits beside data/.
- Refuse survey portals that only rank for the job phrase.
Extra first-hour reminders
Keep the extract folder out of Downloads if your cleanup policy empties that directory nightly. Move it to Documents or a Tools path before students arrive. A vanished data folder looks like a broken editor when it is only a cleanup script.
If two people share one PC, agree whether each user gets a private extract or one shared read-only editor with private project folders. Write that choice on the ticket so the next volunteer does not invent a third layout.
When the hour ends, leave the Releases bookmark in the staff browser profile and a one-line note on the machine card. That is enough to restart pixel art work tomorrow without another scavenger hunt.
